I’m so excited to introduce you to Bernice in Milwaukee, one of Milwaukee’s fashion gurus, to y’all to talk about wedding fashion trends. Let’s get right to it. [big-sep] It is officially the season we love to hate…wedding season. From July through October we all dust off our dancing shoes and head to the Crate & Barrel registry. For many of us, the biggest event-related stress is what to wear. Do we buy a new dress just for the occasion or repurpose one from 2011? Do we wear the four-inch heels that make our legs look amazing or the practical flats we can dance in all night? How do we incorporate this season’s trends into appropriate wedding attire? Was I the only one wondering about that last one? Lucky for you, I am here to both ask and answer all your important fashion questions.
Let’s start with the (hopefully) obvious. One of this year’s biggest trends is white. You can’t swing a microphone around a red carpet without hitting a b-list actress in an adorable white summer dress.
Your college roommate’s wedding is NOT the time to follow this particular trend. I’m even going to draw the line for your cousin’s bridal shower. This is a rule you can not break in our corner of the world! If the event is in any way related to a wedding and you are not the bride, you need to leave this statement piece at home. Save it for the office BBQ. Don’t worry, there are many other great options for you.
The easiest trend to incorporate into your wedding wardrobe are graphic floral prints. The beauty of this trend is that you can choose the style, cut, and color that works the best on your figure.
I suggest searching a boutique for this type of piece to ensure originality. You don’t want to arrive in a busy, eye-catching dress that another guest is wearing.
If you are very brave or employed as a model, try the two piece trend and wear a bustier top with a high wasted skirt. The goal here is to still look demure. The print must be pretty or delicate. The skirt should be long. The stomach should be tight enough to bounce a quarter off of. When done well, it is perfectly appropriate for an outdoor August wedding. If you try or witness this trend at a wedding not in LA, please forward a picture to me for historical documentation purposes.
More realistic options include accordion pleats (skirts are also office appropriate!), one statement sequined piece for a more formal affair, or almost any item in bright pink or orange. When the weather turns cooler this fall, throw a graphic cardigan over your shift, try a deep burgundy color, or a tuxedo jacket. Of course, I’m going to break my first rule already and tell you to go for the white blazer. As a jacket or cover up, white is perfectly appropriate and perfectly on-trend.
A great way to be trendy without revamping your wardrobe is by doing something fun with your hair. Literally, your creativity is the limit here as long as the ‘do isn’t reminiscent of Heidi.
If that option feels too youthful, the ‘messy bun’ is an easy alternative. To make it fashion forward, add decorative flowers, barrettes or headbands. I know just the place you can find them!
[line-sep] Before you know it we’ll be debating holiday party attire, so enjoy the strappy sandals and spaghetti strap dresses of wedding season while you can. May the bouquet be with you!
