When I said you don’t need much for a new baby I hope you didn’t think that I didn’t want you to treat yo’self! Girlfriend (and/or boyfriend), you are in for a world of hurt change, so you might as well buy yourself and the adorable little noise-maker some fancy things, too.
Here are three things I think every new parent should invest in.
A Fancy Diaper Bag
Last year about this time I had no idea who Petunia Pickle Bottom was, nor that “she” makes some of the most expensive quilted baby bags you can get your hands on here on the third coast. Those just aren’t my jam, but this little number by Timi and Leslie is right up my alley. It looks so much like a briefcase that I thought about dumping out the diapers and burp clothes and adding in my iPad and train tickets to take it to Chicago last month.
You are going to carry this bag around in place of a purse, so you might as well get something in mom’s style vs. a cute little bunny pattern. And look at it this way – you won’t be buying your quarterly purse upgrade, so the money saved can go to this splurge.
P.S. Buy a cheapo messenger bag for dad. Let Tough Guy still feel like a man when carting his precious cargo around.
Aden and Anais Swaddle Blankets
Having a baby has taught me what to bring to baby showers from here on out. Ironically enough, I will probably always get clothes seeing as most people stayed away from that option, leaving us scrambling.
What did we get too much of? Receiving blankets. We could wallpaper the entire upstairs with them! We use these blankets a lot, but seeing as we now do laundry once a week, I’m not sure we will ever get to the bottom of the pile.
You will probably get a couple personalized ones, which are adorable and don’t count towards the extraneous blanket list, but if you still want to register for some, consider the swaddlers from Aden and Anais. While slightly more expensive, these will become your Prince(ess)’s favorite thing! They work well in cold and hot weather. They are breathable enough to be a car seat cover and thin enough to tuck into a perfect swaddle. We also got bibs made from the same muslin/bamboo fabric from this brand which I use for bottle feeding all the time. I will never cease to be amazed at the amount of liquid these guys can suck up and still feel dry.
Honest Company Diaper Subscription
Randy wanted cloth diapers. I didn’t want to touch more poop than absolutely necessary. What were these earth-loving parents to do? Get a subscription to Honest Company’s diapers and wipes!
I’m sure if I dug deep, I would find out that these aren’t as environmentally friendly as advertised, but so far what I’ve found makes me feel better about putting a biggilion of them in the garbage every day.
We tried other chemical-free diapers, but nothing kept everything in until we tried these. Let’s just say that Eggroll has taken to only pooping every two days, so when she does, well… I feel like I should personally send Jessica Alba a fruit basket for creating something that keeps all that encapsulated.
When I got my first month’s subscription, I also tried their sample pack of soaps and detergents. Eh. They smelled delicious, but the hand soap and lotion made my hands super dry. I’m just going to stick with the diapers and wipes for now.
If you do test out this subscription, tell them Maggie Joos sent you. I get a discount on my next month when they are notified I referred someone. Pay it forward, friends!
Those are my three splurges I have made so far that made sense. Don’t get me wrong, I spent money on a lot of other stuff, too (larger underwear, a winter coat for Eggroll, and the big, double breast pump when the single guy works just fine).
