What I’m Reading: Let’s Pretend This Never Happened

Do you read The Bloggess blog? Because you should.

Jenny writes just like I do. Well, like I would if I was a bit more witty and had more interesting stories to tell.

Let's Pretend This Never HappenedI stumbled into her book at the Powell’s Bookstore while we were in Portland. I had heard of the Bloggess, but never read her stuff on a regular basis. Now that I’ve read her via the paper version, her site is one of my first stops every morning.

Jenny is hilarious. And real. Her dad is a taxidermist. Need I say more?

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) is excellent. Here is an example of the perfection that is this book:

“My doctor explained that I had a rare form of the disease called polyarthritis, which meant that instead of staying in a single place, the arthritis jumps around from body part to body part on an almost daily basis… The best way I can describe it is that every night I go to bed knowing that Freddy Krueger will be waiting to beat the shit out of me with a baseball bat, and that I’ll wake up with whatever horrific injuries he’s inflicted. Except that this isn’t a movie about Elm Street and it’s my life. Plus, Johnny Depp isn’t there. So it sucks in a myriad of ways.”

Seriously, guys. Read this. It’s more “real” than chick lit, but a still a funny and sentimental book you will breeze through with ease. Bonus – it reads kind of like a blog, so you can take in a chapter at a time without feeling like you need to stay up all night to finish. Bite sized pieces, y’all. Tis the season for snack-sized treats, after all!
